How to Approach Detail Photos of Reception Tables | St. Louis Wedding Photographer
It can be a challenge to photograph the reception details with the limited amount of time we may get before guests enter a set room. It’s been helpful for me to develop a process that allows me to stay on track in a time crunch, while shifting my angle and focus to showcase each element in a way that not only resonates with the couple's vision, but also highlights the work of each vendor partner involved. Let’s get into how I approach reception tables specifically!
To start, I like to capture a single reception table to showcase the overall colors, textures, and patterns that are layered into the design. If there is more than one table variation, I’ll photograph each version intentionally based on the light and background.
From there, my focus shifts to the florals, as I move in closer to capture the centerpiece. Again, if there are varying centerpieces, I will do this for each version.
Then, I’ll move in even closer to photograph a single table setting to feature the tableware, paper elements, favors, etc.
After those three must-haves, I’ll vary my angle and focus around the table to capture any extra important, unique, or personal details. Does the shape of the menu match the shape of the dance floor? Is the bride’s grandmother’s favorite flower in the centerpiece? Do the table numbers reference how the couple met? All of the little things (that are actually big things) to fully tell the story of the wedding.
Below, you’ll see how I approached a reception table, designed by Kate + Co, that features bold patterns, colors, and textures at the Ritz-Carlton Solarium in St. Louis, Missouri.
